This year marks a momentous milestone for the Korean Society of Interventional Neuroradiology (KSIN), as we celebrate 30 years of innovation, collaboration, and advancement in interventional neuroradiology. Since its inception in 1994, KSIN has played a crucial role in shaping the landscape of neurointervention both in Korea and globally.
KSIN was founded on August 30, 1994, by 8 pioneering radiologists with a shared vision to advance the field of interventional neuroradiology: Professors Dong Ik Kim, Sun Yong Kim, Hong Sik Byun, Dae Chul Suh, Hae Young Seol, Gil Woo Lee, Nam Joon Lee, and Moon Hee Han. Their combined efforts laid the groundwork for what would grow to become a leading professional society. From its modest beginnings, KSIN quickly expanded its influence, both domestically and internationally. The society’s first significant international engagement came in 1994, when KSIN participated in the Asian Australian Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (AAFITN) conference. This participation signified the start of KSIN’s active involvement in the global neurointerventional community.
A pivotal moment in KSIN’s history came in 2001, when it hosted the 6th World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology (WFITN) meeting in Seoul, which attracted 697 participants from 31 countries, underlining Korea’s growing importance in the field. KSIN continued to collaborate with China and Japan, and in 2010 established the East Asian Conference on Neurointervention (EACoN), which has become an annual event, with hosting duties rotating between Japan, China, and Korea. Following these successes, KSIN has experienced tremendous growth, marked by key milestones that have further cemented its leadership in interventional neuroradiology over the past decade. In 2016, KSIN joined the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences (KAMS) as a full member society, signaling KSIN’s efforts to promote interdisciplinary collaboration between neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and neurologists.
K SIN has prioritized education through various initiatives, including the annual Summer Intensive Course since 2003, focusing on challenging neurovascular case discussions to enhance member development. In 2019, handson workshops on advanced neurointerventional techniques provided essential practical training. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, KSIN adapted by hosting the AAFITN conference online in 2020, attracting participants from 25 countries. In addition, KSIN collaborated with the Korean Neuroendovascular Society to publish a comprehensive textbook on ‘Neurointerventional Surgery’, further emphasizing its commitment to advancing education and fostering collaboration in the field.
KSIN has made notable academic contributions, particularly through its journal, Neurointervention, which has been recognized by being indexed in Scopus (2022) and Web of Science (2023). This highlights the journal’s growing influence in the neurointervention field. In addition, since 2016, KSIN has implemented an accreditation program for neurointerventionists and hospitals to ensure high standards of care, enhancing clinical practice and patient outcomes in neurointervention across Korea.
Over the past 30 years, KSIN has experienced significant growth, hosting international conferences, driving research innovation, and enhancing the training of young neurointerventionists. Its strong global partnerships and commitment to excellence have shaped the future of interventional neuroradiology in Korea and beyond. As KSIN celebrates its 30th anniversary, it honors its past while focusing on future breakthroughs in neurointerventional practice worldwide.
