Kang, Pyun, and Kang: Clinical Study for Achilles Tendon Rupture

Abstract

Rupture of Achilles tendon may result from varinos canses (direct and indirect injury), especi al y by trauma.
It was first reported by Paré (1575) and therafter the various canses, diagnostic & therapeutic methods of the ruptured tendon have been described by many workers.
Almost all the workers agreed that the prognosis was good by early diagnosis and early treatment. In this report, 31 cases (19 in male & 12 in female) of injured Achilles tendon had been treated and follow-up study of 22 cases had been made during 13 years from Aug. I960 to June 1973. The results are summarized as follows;
1. Rupture of the Achilles tendon occurred most commonly in men of the early 3rd decade(61%).
2. Rupture by direct injury was mommon than by indirect injury.
3. Rupture of the left side was more common than that of the right side.
4. The most frequent site of rupture was 2-6 cm above the the insertion of the tendon(80%).
5. The result of end-to-end repair and Lynn method within 10 days of injury and of reconstructive surgery after more than 10 days were good or satisfactory.
6. The results by conservative treative treatment with cast immobilization were satisfactory (4 cases).
7. The normal function of Achilles tendon can be regained abgnt 5 months after treatment.
