Moon, Kim, and Lee: Paraplegia Secondary to Post Surgical Pseudoarthrosis in Infantile Progressive Scoliosis

Abstract

Authors presented a case of paraplegia secondary to scoliosis. Patient developed spastic paraplegia after posterior spinal fusion which was carried out for the purpose of treating scoliosis. Post-surgically patient developed pseudoarthrosis between sth and 9th thoracic spine where huge bony spur complicated: Paraplegia was caused by pressure on the anterolateral aspect of the cord by spur' at the pseudo arthritic apex of the curve. This case was successfully treated by right lateral and anterior decompression by removing offending pedicles, spurs and ribs, and rerouting the cord to the newly made canal.
