February 2020 marks the publication of the first issue of volume 50 of the Journal of Periodontal and Implant Science (JPIS). In 1971, JPIS was first published as the Journal of Korean Academy of Periodontology, the official journal of the Korean Academy of Periodontology (KAP). It was published once a year, and volume 1 contained 3 original articles and 2 case reports. In the preface of volume 1, the 6th President of the KAP, Jae-Hyun Lee, expressed the expectation that the members of the KAP would have to make efforts to improve the KAP and to keep abreast of global trends. Due to the efforts of numerous researchers in periodontology, the journal started to be published biannually in 1988, triannually in 1993, and quarterly in 1996. Initially, it was published in Korean, and preparations were made to convert it to an English-language journal by publishing supplements in English for 3 years starting in 2006. In 2010, the name of the journal was changed to “Journal of Periodontal and Implant Science (JPIS)”, and thanks to the dedicated efforts of the former Editor-in-Chief Tae-Il Kim, it has been transformed from a local journal to a global journal. JPIS is currently indexed, tracked, and covered by many databases, including the Science Citation Index Expanded, Scopus, PubMed, and PubMed Central.
Many researchers submit their research results to JPIS, and a significant number of articles published in JPIS have been cited by researchers worldwide. The percentile of JPIS was 40.11 in the Journal Citation Report category of Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine in 2018, and there is still much more to be done. Nonetheless, we can take great pride in the progress that we have made over the past 50 years. These developments were made possible by the strong support of all of the members of the KAP. In the future, JPIS will strive to become a more renowned, highly influential journal.
