Shin: A study on the normal cerebral artery of Korean adults by carotid angiography

Abstract

The cerebral angiography was done in 212 normal Korean adults; 148 males and 64 females. The roentgenologictechniques were essentially the same with those described in the textbooks. The arterial configulations, distributional pattern of the intracarinial vessels, caliber sizes of the arteries and the position of the majorarterial trunks were studied and statistically analysed. Following were the results; 1. The caliber sizes of theinternal carotid arteries in the region of the intrapetrosal and intracavernous portion were; 4.7+0.66mm in malesand 4.3+0.1mm in females of the 21-50 age groups, 5.2+0.13mm in males and 4.1+0.24mm in females of the 51-60 agegroups. Those in the region of the carotid siphon were; 3.1+0.06mm in males and 3.1+0.08mm in females of the 21-50age groups. 2. The caliber sized of the anterior cerebral arteries were; 1.5+0.03mm in males and 1.4+0.04mm infemales of the 21-50 age groups, 1.6+0.05mm in males and 1.6+0.12mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. Those ofthe middle cerebral arteries were; 1.6+0.03mm in male and 1.5+0.07mm in females of the 21-50 age groups,1.4+0.08mm in males and 1.5+0.12mm in females of the 21-50 age groups, 1.4+0.08mm in males and 1.5+0.12mm infemales of the 51-60 age groups. Those of the posterior cerebral arteries were; 1.3+0.07mm in males and 1.4+0.1mmin females of the 21-50 age groups, 1.2+0mm in males and 1.5+0.22mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. 3. Thedistances from the ascending vertical portion of the anterior cerebral arteries to the inner table of the frontalbone were; 39.6+0.41mm in males and 40.4+0.54mm in females of the 21-50 age groups. 35.3+1.49mm in males and33.7+1.02mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. Those from the upper portion of the pericallosal arteries to theinner table of the parietal bone were; 40.6+0.5mm in males and 40.2+0.91mm in females of the 21-50 age groups,41.0+1.4mm in males and 38.0+1.46mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. Those from the lower portion of thepericallosal arteries to the inner table of the parietal bone were; 47.4+0.54mm in males and 46.4+1.16mm infemales of the 21-50 age groups, 49.4+1.88mm in males and 47.1+2.21mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. 4. Themorphological variations of the internal corotid arteries in the region of the carotid siphon and theintracavernous portion were; simple S type in 60.4%, double S type in 10.4% and transitonal type in 29.2%. 5. Thedeviations of the anterior certebral arteries to the midline were less than; 2mm in 47.2%, 4mm in 48.0%, 6mm in2.0%, 8mm and 10mm in 1.5% each. 6. The distances from the angiographic sylvian point to the inner table of thetemporal bone were; 36.6+0.45mm in males and 34.8+0.65mm in females of the 21-50 age groups, 35.7+1.72mm in malesand 35.6+1.98mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. Those from the innermost limits of the middle cerebralarteries roughly outining the island of Reil to the inner table of the temporal bone were; 24.2+0.38mm in malesand 22.6+0.59mm in females of the 21-50 age groups, 21.8+1.55mm in males and 21.4+1.39m in females of the 51-60age groups. Those from the lowest major branch of the middle cerebral arteries to the clinoparietal line were;5.7+0.26mm in males and 6.1+0.4mm in females of the 21-50 age groups, 5.4+0.69mm in males and 5.7+0.52mm infemales of the 51-60 age groups. Thus the distance from the lowest major branch of the middle cerebral arteries tothe clinoparietal line in adults is less than that in children. 7. The distances from the most lateral branch ofthe lenticulostriate arteries to the midline were; 32.3+0.56mm in males and 23.6+0.55mm in females of the 21-50age groups, 32.6+1.77mm in males and 32.0+0.79mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. Those from the most medialbranch of the lenticulostriate arteries to the midline were; 22.3+0.72mm in males and 20.6+0.75mm in females ofthe 21-50 age groups, 19.9+0.72mm in males and 23.7+0.51mm in females of the 51-60 age groups. 8. Thecontralateral fillings of the media in the unilateral carotid angiograms were encountered in 28.0%. 9. Thefindings of the posterior communicating, posterior cerebral, ophthalmic and anterior choroidal arteries wereencounted in 57.0%, 24.0%,74.0% and 83.0% respectively.
