Huh, Yeon, and Chung: Radiologic findings of small cell carcinoma of the lung

Abstract

Small cell carcinoma of the lung most often present s roentgenographically as a hilar mass with mediastinalextension. This study is mainly to analyse the raidological manifestation of small cell cancer of the lung andobserve the specific roentgenological findings. Histologically proven 21 cases of small cell carcinoma of the lungduring the last 7 years were reviewed with plain chest film and clinical data. The following results wereobtained; 1. Male to female sex ratio was 6:1. Incidnece was most common in 6th decade as 48%. 2. About 80% weresmoker and among these 90% were moderate to heavy smoker. 3. Cardinal symptoms at diagnosis in the order offrequence were cough, chest pain & hemoptysis. 4. Of the 21 cases, most common radiological finding was that ofhilar prominence or perihilar mass(76%). In 33% of the patients roentgenographic evidence of bronchial obstructionwere observed. In 38%, mediastinal widening or mass was observed. Of the 21 patients, none has the finding ofcavitary pulmonary mass or peripheral pulmonary nodule.
