Kim, Han, Lee, Chang, and Choo: Sialography

Abstract

Sialography, the roentgen visualization of the salivary gland after injection of contrast material into theirrespective ducts, has made an advance in the study of diseases affecting these organs and adjacent structures.Authors present 35 cases of sialography done at the Dept. of Radiology, Seoul National University , between 1979and 1980. Authors analyzed the radiologic, clinical, operative and pathologic findings. The results are asfollows; 1. Among 11 cases of salivary gland tumors, 8 cases were arisen from parotid gland, 3 cases fromsubmandibular gland. Malignant tumors were differentiated from benign tumor by the absence of ductal andparenchymal destructive changes. 2. Among the cases of sialoducholithiasis, 7 cases were in the submandibulargland. They could be easily diagnosed by the filling defect in the duct and secondary inflammatory changes inincluding proximal dilatation, beading of the duct and sialodochiectasis. 3. A case of Sjoegren syndrome showespunctate and globular dilatation of minute ductules of small ductal branches and delayed evacuation suggestingdecreased salivary secretion. 4. Sialography is a safe and important roentgenologic examination of salivary glandswhich gives a helpful information in accurate diagnosis and appropriate thereapeutic planning.
