Lim, Jin, Lee, Choi, Kwon, and Kim: High-resolution ultrasonography of neck masses

Abstract

The 55 sonograms of 53 patients with neck masses were retrospectively reviewed to assess the superiority of high-resolution ultrasonography. Neck masses were divided into-thyroid and extrathyroidal. The thyroid masses included: thyroiditis/Goiter(14), benign tumor(20), and malignant tumor(6). The extrathyroidal masses included: branchial cleft cyst (1), abscess(2), lymphadenopathy(7), tortuous vessel(2), muscular hypertrophy(1), and submandibular gland tumor(2), High-resolution ultrasonography with mechanically driving transducer enabled us toascertain a mass character in detail. Some selected cases such as thyroid adenoma, papillary carcinoma of thethyroid, tortuous vessel, and muscular hypertrophy showed a characteristic sonographic appearance. Although therole of sonography is the initial screening, high frequency transducer provided us better imaging quality of neck masses.
