Jin: The past, present and future of JKAOH
The first issue of Journal of Korean Academy of Oral Health was published in 1967. From then, from 1968 to 1989, one issue was published per year, despite a 9 years gap in between. From 1990 to 1994, two issues were published per year, and since 1995, JKAOH published four issues each year for about 25 years. It is the only long-lasting Journal in the field of preventive and public health dentistry in Korea.
In the early days, the Journal not only published original papers but also news and archival activities of the Korean Academy of Preventive and Public Health Dentistry. However, following the trend in academic environment over time, the nature of the journal changed from an academic newsletters into a precise report of real research results.
Such changes over time can be evaluated not only by the nature of the Journal but also by the changes in the research interests of the people of the academy. As we look over the papers in the Journal, most of the articles are original articles, whereas case reports or reviews are extremely few.
One of the recent outstanding features is that the majority of the original articles reports the analysis of the secondary data, such as Korean National Health, Nutrition & Examination Survey (KNHNES), Korean National Oral Health Survey (KNOHS), and Community Health Survey (CHS).
It is very encouraging that research results such as systemic and oral disease-related factors or risk factors have been reported through the activation of relevant research. However, based on the results of the last 10 years of research, it is time to start a cohort study to reveal the causal relationships between different oral diseases, and an academic society or governmental level project is essential for this study.
Currently, there is an absolute lack of support for the dental cohort study compared to the studies in medical field. A continuous attention and effort through the cohort study would be able to diminish prevailing oral diseases and achieve a real health promotion in a national scale.
