Park, Han, Kim, Cho, and Han: Takayasu's arteritis : angiographic assessment for radiological and surgical interventions

Abstract

Angiographic study of Takayasu's arteritis was performed in 47 patients prospectively with coronary arteriography and digital subtraction angiography(DSA) in addition to the aortography to delineate the arterial involvement of aorta and its major branches including coronary artery. In the 47 thoracic and abdominal aortographies, the order of frequent arterial involvement were left subclavian artery in 26 cases (55%), rightrenal in 21 cases(45%), righty subclavian and left renal in 18 cases(38%) respectively, descending thoracic aortain 15 cases(24%) and left common carotid in 14 cases(30%). In the 47 coronary arteriographies, seven (15%) showed coronary involvement. Proximal or ostial lesions were demonstrated in five cases. DSA was useful in 15 cases to demonstrate the peripheral portions of brachiocephalic branches and to evaluate the pulmonary arteries. These angiographic assessment provided us sufficient information to perform percutaneous trasluminal angioplasty in eight patients including one percutaneous coronary angioplasty, and bypass surgery in eight patients.
