Abstract
Carpal tunnel syndrome have gained increasing attention and acceptance as a significant cause of peripheral neuropathy, since it was first reported in 1836. 54 patients who was admitted to Yonsei University, college of Medicine during the period from January 1972 to December 1989 were analysed for clinical manifestations and the following results were obtained: 1. Among 54 patients, 7(13%) were male and 47(87%) were female. 2. The syndrome occurred on the right side in 15 patients, on the left in 11 patients, and on both in 28 patients. 3. The causes of the syndrome were trauma (9.3%), mass (3.7%), and unknown causes (87.0%).4. Paresthesis (88.5%) was the most common symptom followed by numbness (51.9%), weakness (35.2%), and pain (14.8%). Thenar atrophy occurred in 33 patients (61.1%) while 33 patients (61.1%) were positive for Tinel sign. 5. Among 80 cases of electromyography, denervation potential was seen in 70 cases. Among 80 cases of sensory conduction study, 80 cases (100%) showed abnormal finding. Double crush lesion was occurred in 18 cases (22.5%). 6. 2 cases received conservative treatment while 80 cases received surgical treatment. The internal neurolysis was performed in 10 cases. 7. The average follow-up period was 17 months (12-48 months) and in 81 cases the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome were relieved.
