Choi, Lee, Shin, Suh, and Lee: A Clinical Study of the Children's Ankle Fracture

Abstract

The fracture of the ankle in children are different from those of adults in terms of the fracture and the possibilities of influence to growth. The injuries of the ankle in children occur mostly at the bony structure rather than ligamentous one, and some injuries of the growth plate may result in the arrest of entire growth plate and these may lead to leg length discrepancy or deformity. Accurate treatment under the knowledge of injury mechanism was very important. Twenty-one cases were classified according to Dias & Tachdjian classification and were reviewed. The results are as follows:l. Of the 21 cases, most common age was 14 years in 4 cases (19% ). 2. Traffic accident was most common cause of injury (42% ). 3. According to Dias & Tachdjian classification, supination-lat. rotation type was most common in 8 cases. 4. Sixteen cases (76%) were treated by closed reduction. Among those, only 1 cases (pronation-eversion-lat. rotation type) showed mild leg length discrepancy in the 0.5cm. 5. If accurate anatomical reduction was achieved, good result probably would be followed by closed reduction even in Salter-Harris type III, type IV and triplane fracture.
