Kwon, Ko, Kim, and Lee: Clinical analysis of Carpal Scaphoid Fracture

Abstract

Authors reviewed 51 cases of scaphoid fracture treated from June 1981 to June 1990 with average 18 months follow-up and obtained following results ; l. Among 51 cases, 38 cases were in the third and the fourth decade, and the most frequent cause of the injuries was the falling from a height in 32 cases. 2. The scaphoid waist fractures were 45 cases and transverse one 33 cases. 3. Among 35 fresh scaphoid fractures, undisplaced 25 cases attained bony union in average 13 weeks plaster of Paris immobilization. And displaced 8 cases attained bony union in 12 to 24 weeks later with open reduction and internal fixation. 4. The 16 fractures, more than 6 weeks after the injury were treated with open reducation, internal fixation and bone graft, and obtained bony union 9 to 20 weeks later. 5. Most of all (45 cases) were in excellent and good result except the 6 cases of perilunar fracture dislocation according to the assessment of Maudsley. 6. The fresh, undisplaced carpal scaphoid waist fracture can be treated effectively with plaster of Paris immobilization, and scaphoid waist fracture, more than six weeks after the injury, also with open reduction, internal fixation and bone graft.
