Kim, Kim, Kim, Ko, and Seo: A Clinical analysis of Arthroscopic Meniscectomy

Abstract

We analysed 94 cases (86 patients) of arthroscopic meniscectomy which were performed in Kwang Ju Christian Hospital from May 1987 to Dec. 1989 and all of the patients were followed up for more than 6 months. The results were as follows:1. The patients ranged in age from 10 years to 78 years and 35 patients were in 3rd decade. 60 patients were men and male was affected 2 times more than female. There was no significant difference in site, right knee (40) left knee(38) and both knees(8). 2. In past history, the patients who had trauma history were 55.8 percent (48 patients), 22.1 percent (19 patients) of the those having traffic accidents, 16.3 percent (14 patients) of those having sports injuries. 3. There were 39 medial meniscus, 45 lateral meniscus and 10 both meniscal tears. 4. The most common type of tears was Bucket handle type. 5. Each knee was classified as excellent, good, fair or poor according to criteria used by Tapper and Hoover and satisfactory results (excellent or good) was 65%. A history of preexisting degenerative arthritis in patients with degenerative tears seemed to correlate with a less favorable outcome.
