Moon, Woo, Sun, and Yang: Spontaneous Fracture of the Femoral Neck in the Elderly , 5 Cases

Abstract

Spontaneous fractures of the femoral neck occur through seemingly normal bone without specific injury. They can be divided into two distinct varieties. First, fatigue or stress fractures, which are found in young active adults with normal bony quality after strenuous and prolonged physical activities. And second, spontaneous fractures occuring in the elderly with relatively abonrmal bony condition without a history of strenuous physical activity. But many of elderly spontaneous neck fracture had history of radiotherapy for pelvic neoplasm so, its more seemingly to pathologic furcture. However, in the elderly, osteoporosis is thought to be the most main cause of fracture. The slow development of displacement in the fracture suggests that the blood supply to the femoral head would be subjected to far less risk than acute displaced fracture. In this paper, we are reviewed the patients with spontaneous fractures of femoral neck in the elderly. One treated with hemiarthroplasty, one with multple pinning and two with consertively treated patients had good results. The other one patient who developed avascular necrosis refused for the operative treatment.
