Kim, Han, Lee, and Lee: Reparative Response of the Injured Meniscus: An in-Vitro Morphological Study

Abstract

To demonstrate the intrinsic healing capacity of the meniscus following injury and to exclude the effects of possible extrinsic cell sources and circulating blood supply, an experimental study was conducted in which the menisci of the rabbit knee joint were obtained and a radial incision was made at the mid-section of each specimen extending 80 per cent of its width. The specimens were incubated in the culture media. The results showed that at six weeks the fibroblastic proliferation proceeded at the coapted ends of the injured meniscus and the defects had eventually been filled in with the cellular bridges. The result of this study had let us speculate that under certain favorable conditions the meniscus has the self-healing capacity even its avascular portion of the meniscus and the clinical attempt to repair the injury of avascular portion of the meniscus should be encouraged.
