Park, Seo, Rah, and Choi: A Clinical Study of Dupuytren Contracture

Abstract

Dupuytren contracture is very rare in the orientals, which is characterized by a proliferative fibroplasia and contracture of the palmar fascia with resultant deformity of hand and finger, as mentioned by Dupuytren in 1831. We experienced and treated 9 cases of 7 patients of Dupuytren contracture from Nov. 1985 to May 1990 at Soonchunhyang University Hospital. The results were as follow ; 1. All the cases were male. 2. Average age was 59 years 8 months old and mean duration of disease was 4 years 8 months. 3. Among 7 patiens, 5 patients were heavy mannual workers. Trauma history was associated in 2 patients, pulmonary tuberculosis in 1, diabetes mellitus in 1, and heavy alcohol drinker in 2. 4. Among 9 cases, 5 were left hand and the others were right. The most common affected finger. was 4th. 5. Two patients were affected bilaterally. 6. According to classification by Meyerding, 4 cases were Grade 0, 4 in Grade I, and 1 in Grade II 7. All of 9 cases were treated operatively, 4 cases by partial fasciectomy and 5 cases by partial fasciectomy and digital fasciectomy. 8. According to Classification by Horner, 6 cases were exellent and 3 cases were good during follow up period (average 24 months). 9. During follow up period, there wss no recurrence or extension.
