Kim, Lee, Bin, Oh, and Na: Traumatic Retrolisthesis of the Lumbosacral Junction: a Case Report

Abstract

In the majority of shear fractures of spine, the cranial segments are displaced anterior to the caudal segments. However rarely, unlike the usual variety of shear factures, the caudal segments could be displaced anterior to the cranial segments (traumatic retrolisthesis). In addition, fracture-dislocations of lumbosacral junctions is very rare injury and only 17 cases have been reported by Herron at 1984. The combination of these two rare occurances, that is traumatic retrolisthesis of the lumbosacral junction, had been experienced by authors. The mechanism of injury might be hyperflexion with rotation via crushing force applied to the back of patient. Combined posterior and anterior 2 stage approaches had been used to treat this rare injury.
