Choi, Ahn, Kim, Kim, and Shim: A Clinical analysis of Phantom Limb and Phantom Pain in Amputees

Abstract

Phantom limb is a feeling that amputated limb is persistently existed in amputee, and when the character of this feeling is pain, it is called as phantom pain. The authors analyzed 91 patients from 106 amputees, who have experienced phantom limb and phantom pain from 1990.1.1 to 1990.10.31 in Korea Veterans Hospital. The results were as follows:1. The most common age group was from 41 to 50 years old(39.5%) 2. The chief cause of initial amputation was trauma(82.4%) 3. The most common amputation site were Below-elbow(54.7%) in upper extremity and Belowknee(52.6%) in lower extremity. 4. The most common complications were bony spur and neuroma. 5. By classification of Tetsuya Otsuka, the majority of phantom phenomenon was type V. 6. The character of phantom pain was strong current & charyhorse, pin prickling sensation, contracted fingers & toes, in order. 7. The most common aggravating factor of phantom pain was cold exposures(48 cases). 8. The most common relieving factor was Hot pack & physical therapy(29.6%), medication(24.2%).
