Abstract
Many kinds of internal fixation device for the thoracic snd lumbar spine were reported. Recently the pedicle screws and sacral screws connected to the plates or rods are known to be effective and safe for the spine fusion permitting early mobilization and decreasing the incidence of pseudarthrosis. This is a retrospective clinical and roentgenographic study to evaluate the effectiveness of long bone plates and screws as internal fixation device of spine. We analyzed 22 cases of spine disorder which was fixed with long bone plates and screws from August 1986 to October 1989. The results obtained were as follows:l. Of the 22 cases, spine fracture were 14, spondylolisthesis were 3, herniated nucleus pulposus were 2, tuberculous spondylitis was 1, discitis was 1, and spondylolysis was 1 case. 2. Result of clinical evaluation by Steffee's criteria at last follow up were excellent in 7(32%), good in 9(41%), poor 3 in 2(9%), poor 1 in 4(18%). 3. The complications were observed in 16 cases. A) Generalized complications were 7 cases of gastrointestinal trouble, 2 cases of transient dysuria, 2 cases of superficial infection, 1 case of neuroma in bone donor site. B) Failure in instrumentation were 3 cases of screw loosening and 1 case of screw breakage. 4. The internal fixation using long bone plates and screws for the spine fusion was readily available at a low cost.
