Kang, Choe, and Yang: Polydactyly and Syndactyly of the Foot

Abstract

The polydactyly and syndactyly in the foot is not infrequent and is familially transmitted. They may be an isolated deformity, or may be associated with other congenital malformations or syndromes. Surgical correction is indicated for cosmetic concern and psychological effects, not a functional problems. Fourty eight toes of 36 patients of polydactyly, 26 webs of 19 patients of syndactyly, and 13 feet of 10 patients of polysyndactyly were surgically treated at Severance Hospital during the period from Janunary 1985 to December 1990 and they were reviewed for clinical manifestations, surgical treatment, and their results. The results were as followed; 1. In polydactyly, postaxial type and duplication of the entire digit with a common metatarsal bone was most common. All of them were operated with excision of extra digit, mostly under 5 years of age. 2. In syndactyly, complete type of the second web was most common. Also all of them were operated with separation and full thickness skin graft, mostly under 5 years of age. 3. In polysyndactyly, the most common type was duplication of the fifth entire digit and complete and simple fusion of the toes. All of them were operated under 5 years of age.
