Kim, Choi, Shim, and Cho: The Clinical Study for Geriatric Patients with Hip Fracture Treated with Knowles Pin

Abstract

In old age, the femoral neck & intertrochanteric fractures occurs easily by external force and many kinds of treatment has been introduced. Among them, the knowles pin fixation has advantages of easy method and short operative time in old age with poor general condition. Authors studied 24 cases above 60 years old who were admitted by femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures and treated by knowles pin fixation from March 1986 until December 1989. The results were as follows:1. The femur neck fracture was 16 cases and intertrochanteric fracture was 8 cases. 2. The female was predominant (20 cases-83%) and most common cause of injury was slip down or fall down (18 cases-75%). 3. Associated diseases were recognized from 20 patients among total 24 patients, Hypertension 7 cases, Cardiovascular disease 6 cases, Pulmonary disease 6 cases, Diabetes Mellitus 5 cases etc. 4. Three cases(18%) of the patients had been died 6 months after the operation. Also, there were complications of 8 cases;avascular necrosis 2 cases, non-union 3 cases in femur neck fracture, coxa vara 2 cases, loss of fixation 1 case in intertrochanteric fracture etc. 5. Of the 21 patients which had been confirmed bony union, 9 cases are able to walk without support, 5 cases used with cane, 4 cases used with crutch and 3 canes was bed ridden.
