Choi, Chugn, Yang, and Min: The Clinical Study on Ipsilateral Combined Fracture of the Femur and Patella

Abstract

The authors have experienced 30 cases of ipsilateral combined fracture of femur and patella, and followed up for more than 24 months from January, 1981 to December, 1988. The results were as follows. 1. Among 30 patients, 26 patients were male and 4 patients were female and the most common age group was 4th decades. 2. The most common cause of fracture was traffic accident. 3. The functional result were closely related with the operation method of patellar fracture, which were better in patients treated by modified tension band wiring. 4. The functional results were closely related with the operation method of femoral shaft fracture, which were better in patients treated by IM nailing.
5. The modified tension band wiring of patellar fracture and IM nailing of femoral shaft fracture was considered to be the best method of combined fracture of femur and patella. 6. To avoid ankylosis of knee joint, early knee joint motion, eg. CPM, after rigid fixation of femoral and patellar fracture is necessary.
