Kim, Lee, Lee, and Choi: Clinical and Radiographic Study of Cemented Total Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract

Between December 1984 and May 1990, 31 cemented total knee arthroplasties were performed on 21 patients. There were 3 males and 18 females with 10 bilateral cases. They were followed one to six and half years(avr. three and half yeras). 1. There were 17 cases of osteoarthritis and most of them were more than 60 years old. The diagnoses of 14 knees were rheumatoid arthritis and the age ranged widely from the 3rd to the 9th decade. 2. The average Hospital for Special Knee Rating Scores were 41 points preoperatively and 81 points postoperatively. 3. The average range of motion was increased from 70 preoperatively to 92°postoperatively in rheumatoid arthritis patients, but was a little decreased from 116°to 110°in osteoarthritis patients. the average degree of flexion contracture was improved from 17°to 3°at final follow up. Especially it was markedly decreased from 29°to 5°in rheumatoid arthritis patients. 4. The average preoperative tibiofemoral angle was varus 0.8°and was corrected to valgus 4.2°. The average position of the joint line showed little change after operation.
5. According to the Knee Society Roentgenographic Evaluation and Scoring System, the radiolucent lines were found most frequently in zone 1(7 knees) and zone 4(6 knees) on the anteroposterior radiographs of the tibia. Two of the tibial components were given total radiolucent scres of more than four and only one showed clinical loosening which had total score 10.
