Rhee, Chung, and Bae: Total Or Partial Articular Cartilage Reconstruction of Finger Joints in children by Autogenous Iliac Osteo-Apophyseal Graft

Abstract

Since February 1988, four injured finger joints in 4 children whose average age was 7 were reconstructed with autogenous iliac osteoapophyseal graft and followed them for average 21 months. In all cases, the joint motion was improved from stiffness to average 45 degrees of range of motion, 35-70% of joint motions compared with opposite normal finger joint. The functional results of reconstructed finger joint was much better in elderly children, in metacarpo-phalangeal joints than interphalangeal joints and in cases with partial replacement arthroplasty than total replacement group. Mild but acceptable joint instability was noted. Finally we found the reopening of medullary canal in all reconstructed fingers by serial CT and radiographs, and the progression of longitudinal and appositional bony growth by aging but delayed than opposite normal finger.
