Choi, Lee, Chung, Yeom, and Lee: Correction of severe foot deformity using ilizarov external fixator

Abstract

Twelve patients with severe foot deformity were treated using Ilizarov external fixator. The majority of patients had developed various foot deformities in association with severe scar contracture and hypovascularity following compound injuries, deep burn, or old infection sequelae of the leg and/or foot. The deformities included equinovalgus (3), equinovarus (3), equinocavovarus (1), cavovarus (1), varus (1), valgus (1), vertical talus (1), and valgus with forefoot supination and adduction (1). Ilizarov technique for deformity correction by means of foot osteotomy was employed in eight feet. The age at operation ranged from 5 years to 16 years, averaging 10.5 years. Follow-up periods ranged from 12 months to 32 months, averaging 20 months. Correction of deformities was achieved and maintained in all cases. Ilizarov external fixator is very effective at correcting severe foot deformities, particularly when they are associated with severe scar contractures and hypovascularity.
