Han, Yoon, Kim, Son, Choi, and Lee: A Clinical analysis of concomitant Ipsilateral Fractures of the Humerus and Forearm

Abstract

Concomitant ipsilateral fractures of the humerus and forearm bones result in a so-called floating elbow. Authors treated 17 patients with floating elbow in Inje University Pusan Paik Hospital from June 1980 to June 1990. Most of the injuries resulted from a severe trauma. After average follow up of 1.5 years, the following results were obtained. 1. The injuries resulted mostly from the machinery accident in adults and falling injuries in children. 2. Open reduction and internal fixation for the fractures of both humerus and forearm bones gave the good results in adults. 3. Closed reduction with percutaneous pinning of the supracondylar fracture and closed reduction with cast for the forearm bone fractures gave the good results in children. 4. The recovery were affected by the severity of the initial trauma and method of the treatmen.
