Lee, Cho, Song, Koo, Jung, Park, Jung, and Hwang: Sacrococcygeal Chordoma developed in Young Adult: a Case Report

Abstract

Chordomas are uncommon primary skeletal neoplasm arising from notochordal remnants and exhibit a definite predilection for the extremes of the spinal axis. Approximately 50% arise in the sacrum, 35% in the clivus, and 15% throughout the remainder of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spines. The greatest incidence of sacrococcygeal chordoma is between the ages of forty and seventy years, while most spheno-occipital lesions occur between the ages of thirty and sixty years. Sacroccygeal chordomas reported in young adults are very rare. We have experienced the sacroccygeal chordoma in 26 years old young man and treated with complete excision of sacrococcyx below S2 but it was recurred due to contamination with tumor cells. Recurrence after surgical resection is likely, especially in incomplete resection or contamination of the surgical wound. So, complete wide excision without contamination believed to be the only curative treatment method.
