Park, Lee, Song, Lee, and Han: Direct Repair of Spondyloysis Using Screw

Abstract

The idea repairing the isthemic defect in spondylolysis was made by Buck who published the preliminary result in 1970. Thereafter various operative techniques were described by some authors. The candidates for operation had had persistant disabling low back pain that lasted longer than three months without responding to the conservative treatment. All patients revealed normal lumbar myelogram and CT scan. We reviewed 11 patients of direct repair of spondylolysis from Jan. 1989 to Feb. 1991 using same techique as described by Buck. The follow up periods were 13 months in average. The result of analysis were as follows; 1) There were lumbarization in 1 case, spina bifida occulta in 3 cases. 2) Functional result in 5 cases (46%) were excellent, 3 cases (27%) good, 2 cases (18%) fair, 1case (18%) poor according to Gill's criteria. 3) Radiological consolidation within 6 months occured in 6 patients. 4) In conclusion, this technique was simple and less injury on overlying soft tissue and there was no limited motion around the involved vertebrae. 5) We suppose, satisfactory result is possible according to selection of patients.
