Abstract
The intramedullary nail is the effective device available for patient with appropriate fracture of the femoral shaft in adulthood. Of the intramedullary nailing, the Brooker-Wills nail proved to be an effective device for the stabilization of fractures of the femoral shaft. The use of this nail with both proximal and distal fixation has been successful in preventing clinically significant femoral angulation, malrotation and shorting and has allowed early mobilization of the patient. We analyzed 21 cases of the femoral shaft fractures treated by Brooker-Wills nail from March 1988 to September 1990. The results were as follows; 1. Among the 21 cases, 16 cases were male and 5 cases were female. The average age was 37.8 years. 2. The causes of injury were traffic accident in 16 cases, fall down in 3 cases and direct blow in 2 cases. 3. The average time of union was 4.2 months. 4. The complications were bursting on the fracture site in 2 cases, incomplete fanning of the Brooker-Wills wing in 1 case and non union in 1 case. 5. All cases except one showed bony union and early knee joint motion was possible.
