Park, Yang, Lee, and Cho: Posteromedial Release for Resistant Congenital Clubfoot

Abstract

The most important congenital anomality of the foot is club foot or talipes equinovarus, a deformity easy to diagnosis but difficult to correct completely even in the hands of an experienced orthopaedic surgeon. Thirty four patients who presented fifty one resistant congenital clubfeet were treated at the department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yonsei University College of Medicine between 1980 and 1989, were subjected to clinical analysis. The following results were obtained. 1. There were 23 male and ll female patients; 17 had bilateral club feet. 2. Posteromedial release were done in 51 feet at the age less than 1 year in 22 feet, 1-2 years in 13 feet, 2-3 years in 8 feet, and 3-4 years in 6 feet. The remaining patients had operation at the age of 4 years and 5 years respectively. 3. The patients who were operated on at les than 1 year of age showed better results than those operated on at an older age.
