Abstract
The compartment syndrome, may be developed by various causes, is considered a true emergency in orthopedic practice. To reduce morbidity and mortality from this condition, prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment are absolutely essential. Twelve patients with compartment syndrome were treated at Pusan Paik Hospital from May. 1989 to May. 1991, which shows the following results. 1. Causes were as follows; Prolonged compression of limb in 3 patients (25%), Fracture in 3 patients (25%), Vascular injury in 3 patients (25%), Contusion in 2 patients (16.7%), Crushing injury in 1 patient (8.3%). 2. Common clinical findings were as follows; Pain in 11 patients (91.67%), sensory deficit in 8 patients (66.7%), motor deficit in 7 patients (58.3%). 3. Average of intracompartmental pressure was 68.8 mmHg. In vessel injuries 110 mmHg was average of intracompartmental pressure, 90 mmHg in contusions, 75 mmHg in fractures, 50.5 mmHg in compressions of limbs, 66 mmHg in crushing injury. And compartmental pressure of leg was 91.6 mmHg. 4. Average of delayed time from injury to diagnosis was 15 hrs, average of delayed time from diagnossis to fasciotomy was 4 hrs. 5. Time of Hospitalization was shorter in wound closure by progressive wire approximation than skin graft (Average: 12.3 days).
