Kim, Whang, and Park: Medial Epicondylar Fracture in Children

Abstract

The medial epicondylar fracture has been treated by conservative methods, because it is characterized by not frequent incidence among the elbow fracture in children, not involving part of the articular surface and not contributing to the growth of the distal humerus. This fracture may be associated as complication with the medial instability, limitation of motion of the elbow joint and also neurologic dysfunction of the forearm and hand. We have treated 14 cases with operative method from May. 1984 to April. 1992. Those were analysed by sex, age, cause, mechanism of injury, type of fracture, and its results. The results are as follows; 1. There were 13 males, 1 female and average age was 13 years 3 months. 2. The causes were 6 cases in slip down, 4 cases in arm wrestling, 1 case in Judo. 3. The mechanisms of injuries were 5 cases in direct blow, and 2 cases in dislocation, and 7 cases in avulsion fracture. 4. The types of fracture were 11 cases in displaced fracture, 1 case in displaced fracture with dislocation, and 1 case in entrapement, 5. Open reduction was performed in all cases and internal fixation was done with 2 K-wire in 13 cases and 2 screws in 1 case of nonunion. 6. All cases were healed with the closure of epiphyseal plate, and the results were good with the range of motion and stability.
