Park, Choi, and Lee: Fracture of Ring Apophysis of Lumbar Vertebral Bady

Abstract

Fracture of ring apophysis of lumbar vertebral body is a cartilagenous or osseous lesion separated at the posterior margin of a vertebral body. It is unusual lesion associated with trauma or repeated injury in adolescent and with symptom suggestive of an intervertebral disc herniation. From May 1984 to May 1991, six patients who had fracture of ring apophysis of lumbar vertebral body had undergone operations at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, College of Medicine, Yonsei University. The following results were obtained. 1. The mean age was 23.1 years old ranged from fifteen to thirty-one. 2. There were 5 males and 1 female. 3. The major cause of fracture was trauma and 2 patients were associated with repetitive injury. 4. The major symptoms were low back pain and pain radiating to lower extremity. 5. The most common site of fracture was found at the inferior portion of 5th lumbar vertebral body. 6. The computed tomogram was needed for accurate diagnosis. 7. In all patients, we obtained excellent results with laminectomy, discectomy, and removal of bony fragment.
