Chung, Park, Song, Park, and Son: Traumatic bilateral Hip Dislocation Associated with Unilateral Femoral Fracture: A Case Report

Abstract

Traumatic hip dislocation associated with ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture is a very rare injury and often results from severe trauma such as traffic accidents or fall from heights. This combined injury was first documented by Sir Ashley Cooper19,25,33) in 1823. Wiltberger, Mitchell and Hendrick6.32) estimated its incidence at one out of 100,000 cases of fractured femoral shafts. Until 1978 there have been only 3 reported cases of anterior hip dislocation with ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture in the world25). The results of treatment of this injury are influenced by the age of the patient, associated fracture, method and timing of the reduction. We have treated bilateral hip dislocation, associated with the left femoral shaft fracture, the right tibial shaft fracture, and the right lateral malleolar fracture which were caused by fall from heights. After reviewing of articles, we concluded that this case was rare and worth reporting.
