Kim, Park, and Choi: Refracture of Bones of the Forearm after Plae Removal: Analysis of 3 Cases

Abstract

It is generally agreed that the proper time to remove the plates on the bones of the forearm is about 18 to 24 months after insertion and a protective splint should be applied for 4-6 weeks to prevent the refracture. There were three refractures out of 19 removals from fractures of bones of the forearm at Okpo Daewoo Hospital, Daewoo Medical Foundation between February 1988 and February 1993. After clinical and roentgenographical analysis, the follow ing results were obtained. 1. The plates should not be removed routinely if there are no symptoms. 2. It is reasonable to postpone its removal till at least one year after the complete union of the original fractures, not after insertion. 3. We recommend no athletic activity or heavy work after removal until the thinning of the cortex and the osteoporosis around the original fracture site underneath the plate have returned to normal.
