Seong, Choi, Chung, Lee, Kim, and Nam: Clinical analysis of Discoid Meniscus in Children

Abstract

Discoid meniscus is a relatively common disorder of the knee in Koreans. In children, discoid meniscus are somewhat different from those of adult, in terms of clinical features and greater reparative ability5,7). Such differences and results after operations(total or partial meniscectomy; open or arthroscopic) were analysed clinically. Retrospective analysis of the patients who had meniscectomy for discoid meniscus between January 1982 and December 1991 at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Hosital, was performed. Boys were 11 and girls 5 (two of 5 girls had bilateral discoid meniscus). All of the patients complained pain. Click(75%) was the next frequent symptom. On physical examination, joint line tenderness and swelling which were common in adult, appeared only in 50% and 31% respectively. Among 16 operated knees, 10 cases (2 total meniscectomy; 8 partial meniscectomy) were followed more than one year. Based on Ikeuchis grading system, the results were satis-factory in 8 knees and fair in two.
