Lee, Lee, Baek, Lee, Kim, and Moon: Treatment of Chondroblastoma

Abstract

Chondroblastoma is an unusual bone tumor, occurring at the epiphysis of the growing. long bones and is known to have recurrence rate of around 20% after surgical treatment. We reviewed 13 patients of biopsy-proven chondroblastoma, who were surgically treated at Seoul National University Hospital, from 1976 to 1990. Twelve among 13 patients were in the 2nd and 3rd decades and there were 8 males and 5 females. The location of the tumor was proximal tibia in 5 cases, proximal femur in 3, proximal humerus in 2, tarsal bone in 2, and distal femur in one. Intraarticular invasion was not found in any of the cases. The most common chief complaint was pain. In skeletally immature patients, epiphyseal portion of the lesions were removed through metaphysis by tunneling the epiphyseal plate without arthrotomy. Ten patients were treated by curettage and bone grafting, two by curettage only, and one by curettage and bone cementing. The duration of follow-up was averaged as 3 years and 6 months, ranging from 1 year to 7 years and 2 months. Two cases treated with curettage only, showed local recurrence at postoperative 5th month and 7th month, respectively.
