Lee, Chang, Sin, and Hong: A Clinical Study of Supracondlylar Closing Wedge Osteotomy for Cubitus Varus

Abstract

We report our experience of 37 cases of cubitus varus which were treated by means of supracondylar closing wedge osteotomy and pin fixation from the lateral side (modified French technique). At 1 year and 4 months of follow-up in average, the clinical and radiographical evaluation was performed to determine the late results. The results were summarized as follows; l. Age distribution at operation was ranged from 4 to 30 years with the average at 13.1 years. 2. The time interval between initial injury to operation averaged 5.7 years. 3. The period of cast immobilization was 4.1 weeks (3~6 weeks). 4. The amount of correction as determined by the carrying angle averaged 33.8° (from preoperative 25.0° of varus to postoperative 8.8° of valgus). 5. Postoperative elbow stiffness occurred in 3 patients who were skeletally matured. Two patients were complicated by nerve palsies(one, radial nerve and the other, ulnar nerve) postoperatively which were eventually recovered. 6. According to Oppenheim's classification, excellent 20 cases (54.1%) and good 12 cases (32.4%) results were obtained. The rests (5 cases, 13,5%) were graded poor, mainly because of limited joint motion. 7. We believe that supracondylar incomplete closing wedge osteotomy and lateral pinning is effective for collection of cubitus varus.
