Choi, Lee, Kim, Jeon, Kim, Bae, and Kim: A case of spindle cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix

Abstract

Spindle cell carcinoma is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma characterized histologically by a biphasic pattern with both squamous and spindle cell component. There is controversy in the histogenesis, biologic behavior, optimal treatment and prognostic factor for tumor. Treatment must be similar for squamous cell carcinoma. With a review of literature, we report a case of a 52-year-old female with spindle cell carcinoma in the uterine cervix, which has been managed by total hysterectomy.

(A) Cone biopsy of the cervix shows squamous cell carcinoma, focal fascicles of proliferating spindle cell, which considerable mitotic activity, and focal moderate degree of nuclear atypia (H&E, ×400). (B) Immunohistochemical finding shows positive reaction for smooth muscle actin (smooth muscle antigen, ×400).
