Hong, Kim, Kang, and Kim: Epidermoid Cyst of the Ovary in Young Woman: A Case Report

Abstract

In general, ovarian epidermoid cysts coexist with surface epithelial ovarian tumors. Pure epidermoid cysts are extremely rare diseases, comprising less than 1% of surface ovarian tumors. We present here a pathologically proven epidermoid cyst of the ovary in a young woman with ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance findings.

Figures and Tables

Fig. 1

A 22-year-old female with cystic mass in right ovary.

A. Ultrasonography shows a about 81 × 73 mm sized hypoechoic cystic mass in the right ovary with multiple hyperechoic nodules (arrow) abutting on the wall of that mass.
B, C. Axial T1-weighted image (B) and fat saturation T1-weighted image (C) shows a about 76 × 82 × 73 mm sized hypointense mass compared with muscle at the right ovary. There shows multiple hyper intense nodules (arrow) abutting on the wall of that mass. These nodules were suppressed with fat-saturation technique.
D. Gd-enhanced T1-weighted image shows a enhancing rim of the ovarian mass, though no enhancement was observed inside the tumor.
E. Gross findings of right ovary showed 3 pieces of pale pink to tan cystic membranous tissue containing sebum-like material, measuring 7.0 × 5.5 × 0.3 cm and 70.0 gm in aggregates.
F. The unilocular cyst of right ovary was lined by flattened keratinizing squamous epithelium (arrows) without the components of skin adnexa and other tissue (hematoxylin and eosin, × 100).
