Two years ago, the journal Nature expressed a deep concern about a surge in retracted scientific papers going out of control (doi:10.1038/478026a). According to the report, there was a tenfold increase in the number of retractions over the previous decade, which has caused much trouble for readers, authors, and publishers. If this phenomenon resulted from scientific fraud or misconduct, we could utilize a plagiarism-detecting system with a thorough reviewing process. Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science has already implemented CrossCheck to prevent the fraudulent papers from being published. However, many previous papers may have carried information that should have been corrected like in any other scientific journals, often including updates, errata, or even retractions. For the sake of convenience, these important changes in printed papers should be easily recognized. In this respect, CrossMark service offered by CrossRef provides a clear overlook on the papers, which gives us useful information to verify that they are the most up-to-date and reliable versions. Starting from the first issue of Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science 2014, we will be able to simply click on the CrossMark logos on document files, and get a status box which lets us check if there are any available updates. Based on this system, we are committed to safely maintain authors' scholarly contents.
