Yang and Park: Percutaneous coil embolization in the management of spermatic varicocele

Abstract

Percutaneous occlusion of the internal spermatic vein is a new, safe, and effective alternative therapy tosurgical ligation in the treatment of spermatic varicocele. Embolization with stainless steel coils was done on 10patients with symptomatic spermatic varicocele immediately after diagnostic venography. The results of theseprocedures were assessed by clinical improvement of symptoms and objective diminution of the dilated pampiniformplexus demonstrable using scrotal ultrasonography. In one patient with single coil occlusion had a recurrence, andthe other 9 patients showed both clinical and ultrasonographic improvements of the varicocele. Percutaneousembolization with steel coils appeared to be effective without major complications and the savings ofhospitalization and general anesthesia are important additional merits of this method being performed in theradiologic department on an outpatient basis.
