The last century has envisaged an explosion of biological knowledge that started from the discovery of structure of DNA and protein. Technological advances on the atomic and molecular level analysis of biological phenomenon, thereafter, changed the traditional fields of biology such as immunology, neurobiology, and cell biology into molecular-oriented sciences. They indeed exerted a great influence on the everyday practice of modern medicine as a matter of fact. However, understanding biological phenomena to the level of molecules and atoms does not necessarily mean that the phenomena are now solely on the hands for the molecular biologists. Real-time measurement of minute changes of subcellular constituents may enable us to get an access to the basic physiology of human body and ultimately, to the treatment of various metabolic diseases. Traditional medicinal strategy such as epidemiology and biostatistics, which are based on our experiences and theoretical reasoning, is also important. Alternative medicinal approach may also purport that not only drug development relied on chemical modification and physical improvement, but also conventional natural drug selection comes into effect.
Hanyang Medical Reviews has played significant roles in the advancement of knowledge on these various aspects of medical sciences since 30 years ago. The goal of the Hanyang Medical Reviews is to publish high quality review manuscripts dedicated to not only to basic but also to clinical medical research. Any authors affiliated with an accredited biomedical institution may submit manuscripts of review articles. Hanyang Medical Reviews used to be a medical journal for publishing review article written in Korean by Hanyang univertisy, college of medicine.
We are at an historic turning point for the biomedical research and one that will disproportionately affect authors. Hanyang Medical Reviews is a journal owned by the Hanyang University, college of Medicine. The fact that it is a college-owned journal is a feature that I did not fully appreciate when I took over the reins 1 year ago. That will put the journal in a complete different form compared with as it was because the main revenue comes from the college. In this era of economical shortage, research funding cutbacks, to maintain high standards of quality without changing into a SCI journal would be very difficult. To achieve that goal, we are to launch a bit different, but, in true sense, same review journal hereafter. Hanyang Medical Reviews will publish both English-written and Korean-written reviews for some time from now on. Editorials are also to be invited by the Editor and should be commentaries on articles published recently in the Journal. Editorial topics could include active areas of research, fresh insights, and debates in all fields of medicine. I will make a distinction between a college journal and a college-owned journal. A journal that is endorsed, but not owned, by the college is our ultimate goal.
The Hanyang Medical Reviews aims to promote the emerging research fields encompassing both clinical and basic areas. By covering the broad area of modern medicine, we aim for the methodological fusions to elucidate complex biological phenomena in sufficient detail. As the findings of human genome details come out and molecular design of biological machineries continue to expand, we can meet a new century that will have an exciting potential for medicinal biologists and system biologists that can transform our views to understand biological sciences.
