Recently, the Korean Journal of Urology (KJU) was indexed in Pubmed and Pubmed Central (PMC), two high-quality international journal databases. Since its inception in January, 1960, this news adds further momentum to the history of the KJU. Of note, the KJU was first indexed in 1999 on KoreaMed to provide access to articles published in Korean medical journals. Soon thereafter, KJU was later registered in the Scopus and Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), excellent international scientific search engines on the web since 2008 [1].
The official language of the KJU was both Korean and English because the KJU is an official journal of the Korean Urological Association. However in January 2010, the KJU became an all-English language journal due to increased international readership and citations. Even though changing the language from Korean to English may not be easy for some members of the Korean Urological Association, this decision enables the KJU to take a giant leap forward in its quest toward being an internationally-renowned journal.
The KJU is currently a free-access journal and will become open-access soon. This policy of the KJU matches with that of the PMC, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) free digital archives of biomedical and life sciences.
The aims and scope of the KJU are to provide international readers' access to Asian data on various urological diseases as well as in the innovative research fields; such as urological oncology, laparoscopy/robotics, lasers in urology, female urology, sexual dysfunction and investigative urology. The special features of the KJU include online video clips and illustrations of newly developed surgical techniques. The KJU will provide epidemiologic data, Urology politics and news in Korea.
The KJU is ready to communicate with international readers and provide Asian data for them, including Korean data in the urologic field, and we welcome article submissions from all over the world. The next step of the KJU is to be registered in Medline and SCI(E) and our final goal is to become a high-quality, international peer-reviewed journals in the field of Urology.
