Shim, Chun, Lee, and Kim: The Clinical analysis of Multiple Long Bone Fractures

Abstract

The patient with injuries of multiple long bones in two or more extremities needs several special considerations in the treatment of fractures. We must decide whether to give the highest priority to manage the fracture in the way that would promote the earlier bony union and return to function. Nineteen cases of multiple long bone fractures in two or more extremities were treated in Won Kwang university hospital from January, 1984 to August 1989. These patients were analysed clinically and the results were as follows. 1. The prevalent age was the fifth decade(37%). The main cause of injuries was traffic accident (95%) 2. According to the classification of the injured type, the concomitant fracture of both lower extremities (group 1) was the most common group and the femur fracture was combined in 89% of the patients. 3. Almost all of fractures were treated by the open reduction and device of fixation was used prevalently the plate in femur, the external device in tibia. Early or immediate amputation of the most seriously injured extremity must be considered in the special or life-threatening situation. 4. A good or excellent functional result was more common in the group 2 patients who performed early mobilization by rigid fixation devices. But over-all functional result was poor grade(62 points).
