The Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health welcomed its new executive committee in the spring of 2022, and we continue to prepare for this still-new century. As we look back on our 60-year history and as we look forward to 2027 and the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the publication of the Journal of Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health, the Association’s official journal, we must devote ourselves anew to a better future as we anticipate a new start.

Now that society is seeing the light at the end of the long tunnel of COVID-19, the movement to return to daily life is stronger than ever. However, since we have all endured long periods of non-face-to-face interaction and have grown accustomed to new communication methods, we can expect that the daily life we will encounter in the future will be quite different from the one we experienced in the past.

The research field now comprises not only the on-site, face-to-face communication world but also the virtual, non-face-to-face communication world, and this is emerging as an important research topic in and of itself. As a consequence of this broadening of the research field, even research on disciplines that were previously quite unfamiliar to us is expanding. One of the most important implications of this shift is the breaking down of boundaries in and between academic fields. While signs of the erosion of intra- and inter-disciplinary boundaries were visible in the past, it is impossible to erase the feeling that the development of that atmosphere has accelerated in the context of COVID-19.

The 77th Oral Health Day was held on June 9th across South Korea. The government took the occasion to announce the country’s future oral health-related business plans. These plans included a variety of highly innovative content in line with the recent phenomenon of reduced intra- and inter-disciplinary boundaries and the prioritization of people-centered, integrated management.

People-centered management is one of the most important concepts in the contemporary research climate and an important issue in the field of health overall. As such, the Academy feels that in terms of direction, it should pursue research on people-centered management in particular. Accordingly, I expect that the members of the Academy will take the lead in producing solid results in that area that will enhance the literature and benefit the public in the future.

대한예방치과·구강보건학회는 2022년 봄에 새로운 집행부로 교체되었다. 60년 역사를 바탕으로 새로운 100년을 준비하는 학회로 또 앞으로 5년 뒤에는 학회지 발간 60주년을 맞이하게 되므로 새 출발에 대한 기대와 더불어 더 발전된 미래를 위해 정진하는 자세가 필요하다.

우리 사회적으로도 그간 코로나-19의 긴 터널을 어느 정도 빠져나오는 느낌이 들면서 과거의 일상으로 돌아가려는 움직임이 그 어느 때 보다 강해졌다. 그러나, 긴 비대면의 시간을 견디어 오면서 나름대로 새로운 방식에 익숙해진 우리이기에 앞으로 우리가 맞이하게 될 일상은 과거와는 다른 형태의 일상이 될 것이라고 예측할 수 있다.

연구 분야에서도 이제는 대면을 통한 연구 수행 뿐 만 아니라 비대면 혹은 가상세계를 활용한 연구와 소통도 중요한 화두로 떠 오르면서 우리에게 다소 생소한 분야까지도 연구 영역으로 확장되어 가고 있다. 이런 변화의 가장 큰 핵심의 하나는 경계가 허물어 진다는 점이다. 예전에도 학문 영역간 경계가 허물어 지는 조짐이 있기도 하였으나, 코로나-19의 상황 속에서 이런 분위기가 어느 정도 더 가속화되었다는 느낌을 지울 수 없다.

지난 6월 9일은 제77회 구강보건의 날이었다. 정부는 구강보건의 날에 앞으로 추진해야 할 구강보건사업계획을 발표하였다. 그 내용 중에는 상당히 혁신적인 내용도 다수 포함되어 있는데, 이는 최근 학문 분야의 경계가 허물어 지고 사람 중심의 통합 관리를 우선시 하는 현상과도 어느 정도 흐름을 같이 하는 것이라고 생각되어 진다.

특히 사람 중심의 관리가 보건분야의 중요한 이슈로 자리매김할 때 무엇보다 중요한 연구분야의 하나는 우리 학회가 추구하는 방향이라고 생각되어지며, 앞으로 우리 학회 회원들이 중심이 되어 국민에게 도움이 되는 많은 연구와 좋은 성과를 내기를 기대해 본다.
