The year 2021 marks the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health. In the oriental background, there is a belief that a new 60 years of history starts after the completion of 60 years. In other words, there is a brand new beginning every 60 years.

The Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health has set the 60th-anniversary slogan as “Past 60 Years of Oral Health, upcoming 100 Years of Dreaming Together’’ to look back on the past footprints and prepare for the future. We are putting in efforts to improve the nation’s oral health in the new era.

Starting something new has a special meaning, but to pioneer something based on the past 60 years of history bestows measurable potential and power to move forward. This potential is what makes the 60th anniversary so remarkable.

The role of journals in the development of an academy cannot be neglected. The Journal of Korean Academy of Oral Health (JKAOH) was first launched in 1967, and since then has been introducing various research achievements of the members. The journal website (www.jkaoh.org) provides easy access to the last 50 years’ worth of research articles with just one click.

Studying preliminary research is one of the most crucial elements when brainstorming for a new project. If the study on preliminary research is not conducted adequately, it leads to a repetition of what others have already done, lacking originality. Therefore, making articles available through rich archives makes the research process easier and further accelerates the speed of academic development.

Unlike in the past, sharing data and research articles is an active progress aided by many search engines. Nonetheless, a unique journal archive has its blend of research colors pursuing research direction that everyone can recognize.

I am looking forward to every kind of research that the Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health members will propose in the future. There will undoubtedly be new and innovative achievements contributing to the improvement of the nation’s oral health. I want to express my appreciation to the 60th anniversary of the Korean Academy of Preventive Dentistry and Oral Health and JKAOH, and I look forward to their developments in the future.

2021년은 대한예방치과∙구강보건학회 창립 60주년을 맞이하는 해이다. 동양에서는 60갑자를 지나면 새로운 60갑자가 시작된다고 여긴다. 즉, 60년마다 새로운 출발을 한다고 볼 수 있는 것이다.

대한예방치과∙구강보건 학회는 이제껏 지나온 발자취를 돌아보고 미래를 준비하는 의미에서 「구강 건강 한 길 60년, 함께 꾸는 꿈 100년」을 60주년 기념 슬로건으로 정하고, 새로운 시대에 국민의 구강건강을 증진하기 위한 노력을 기울이고 있다.

무엇이든지 새롭게 시작한다는 것은 남다른 의미가 있는데, 이것이 60년의 역사를 토대로 새롭게 시작한다는 것은 엄청난 잠재력과 동력을 지니고 있다고 할 수 있어서 60주년의 의미가 더욱 깊다고 할 수 있다.

학회 발전 과정에 학술지의 역할도 빼 놓을 수가 없다. 대한구강보건학회지는 1967년에 창간되어 그동안 학회 회원들의 다양한 연구 성과를 소개하고 있다. 학회지 홈페이지(www.jkaoh.org)에서는 과거 자료를 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 서비스가 제공되어, 50여년 전의 연구도 단 한 번의 클릭만으로 쉽게 접할 수 있다.

연구를 구상할 때 가장 중요한 일 중의 하나는 선행 연구 조사이다. 선행 연구 조사가 제대로 안 되면, 이미 다른 사람이 한 것을 반복하게 되는데, 이는 연구물이 갖추어야 하는 독창성면에서 많이 떨어진다고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 아카이브를 통한 자료 제공은 연구자의 연구 과정을 보다 더 쉽게 도와주고, 학문 발전을 앞당기게 하는 중요한 역할을 한다고 볼 수 있다.

요새는 과거와 달리 많은 검색 엔진을 통해서 자료 공유가 활발히 이루어지고 있으나, 고유 학술지 아카이브는 그들의 연구 색깔이 녹아있고, 앞으로 추구하는 방향까지도 쉽게 알아볼 수 있다는 의미에서 더 의의가 있다.

이제 또 새롭게 시작하는 대한예방치과∙구강보건학회의 구성원들이 앞으로 어떠한 연구 성과를 써 나갈지 벌써부터 기대가 되며, 이는 이전과는 더 새롭고 또한 보다 더 국민의 구강건강 증진에 기여하는 중요한 연구 성과라 될 것이라고 확신하며, 창립 60주년을 맞이하는 대한예방치과∙구강보건학회의 발전과 학술지의 발전을 기대해 본다.
