Chung, Yoo, and Kang: Fractures of Femoral Neck in Children

Abstract

Fracture of the neck of the femur in childhood is a rare injury and it behaves differently from that in adult. It is accompanied by a high rate of complications in contrast to other fractures in children. Since their anatomic and physiologic characteristics make treatment difficult, treatment of these fractures remains an unsolved problem. Twenty cases of children's femoral neck fracture, treated at Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University from January 1980 to March 1989 were reviewed and the following results were obtained.: 1. This injury occurs in children at all age groups and the highest incidence was between the ages of 4 and 7 years. 2. Of twenty cases, 8 were males and 12 females. 3. The fracture usually followed severe violence, especially traffic accidents or fall-from-a height. 4. According to Dellbet and Colonna classification, cervicotrochanteric fracture (Type III ) was the commonest type and displaced fracture were 12 cases. 5. Complications were 4 cases of AVN, 3 cases of coxa vara and 2 cases of premature epiphyseal fusion. 6. According to Ratliff's assessment, the results revealed as 17 cases of good, 2 cases of fair and 1 case of poor, and good result was obtained in 6 cases after closed reduction and internal fixation.
