Rowe and Rhim: Total Hip Arthroplasty with Truncated Ceramic Cone

Abstract

The authors report an experience of truncated ceramic cone in 186 total hip arthroplasties that were followed up to at least 2 years. The follow up results were assessed by measuring the acetabular angle and the migration of acetabular cup. The results were as follows;1. Definite loosening of acetabular cup were observed in 3 hips(1.6%) and one of them was revised. 2. Mode of cup fixation were osseous fixation in 154 hips(82.8%), fibrous in 14(7.5 %) and unclear in 18(9.7%). 3. Acetabular cup angle decreased in 56 hips of the total 186 hips(30.1%) with average of 7.6°±3.6°,however these decreases were not correlated with decrease of hip function. 4. Migration of cup was noticed in 13 hips of the total 186 hips(7.0%) with average of 7.2±1.6mm and migration was correlated with decrease of hip function. As a conclusion of study, ceramic cup of Mittelmeier type showed relatively good results. However the incidence of cup migration were relatively higher. To decrease this migration of cup, resection of acetabular bone should be minimized.
